For me, getting started is a difficult thing! So this introduction blog post is not easy but I’m going to give it a whirl if only so that I can get started on everything else. I’ll probably re-iterate a lot of what’s written on the homepage, just rambling it a bit more, and tell you a little more about myself.
I’m a recent graduate from University – I have an Honors Bachelors of Arts in English and Linguistics, following that I did a Masters of Arts degree in Linguistics. I studied onomastics which is a big way of saying I studied names. Specifically, how we relate to our names and the importance a name has on our identity. After earning that degree, I went straight into my MLIS (Masters of Library and Information Sciences) degree. Now I’m on the hunt for a job!
While doing my MLIS degree I discovered bookbinding. Unfortunately, it’s not an easy trade to get in to, especially in Canada! If I wanted to study it, I’d have to go abroad and currently I’m thinking I should get a job first before I take up any more degrees. I did, however, join the Canadian Bookbinding and Book Arts Guild (CBBAG). Through the guild I’ve been able to take a few courses and meet people who have helped me get started. I currently also run the Southwestern Ontario chapter’s Facebook page with a friend. It’s been a great way to get involved and get to know others in the profession. I am very fortunate to be taking courses with a local bookbinder who is extremely skilled in the trade.
While I’m just beginning I’m hope that I’ll be able to hone my skills and really get into the trade. I’ll be posting my adventures and progress here on my blog. I’ll also be posting about tips and tricks I learn, as well as information about supplies, tools, and anything I find interesting that’s related to bookbinding!
Along with a blog I hope to set up shop, sell some DIY bookmaking kits, supplies, tools, and books I have made. So keep an eye out for that!
